Blog Update

The Chic-a-Lac Blog is finally undergoing renovation, rehabilitation, revision, renewal, reorganization, revitalization and resuscitation. All of this is happening in stages. Some of the old features are gone, such as the Virtual Patio Message Board which is no longer supported, some have been updated like the Youngsville weather thingy, many of the links, like the Camp Album, in the right sidebar and in the posts themselves need relinking in order to work and some new material and features will be added. So please bear with us if some of the things just don't seem to work right. And please feel free to pass along your thoughts, ideas and even a minor criticism or two. You can always reach the blog by clicking on this button Ca. Chic a Lac Mail Thanks for your understanding.

Not sure of the first...then Siddell, Freddie, Roy, Mortie, Carl, Ralph, Ethel.

Lat row:

Amazing - tell me more about Freddie and Tibor.....

Anonymous said...

Freddie (can't remember his last name) was the asst. head counselor for one year, was on the CCNY fencing team. Tibor Bohn was from the Bronx, ran track (Columbus?).

He and I raced once in the quarter mile (he lost!).

Neil L said...

BTW, Freddie sang "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat" in Guys & Dolls. He was amazing. Wierd, but amazing!

Corinne Selinger Weisberg said...

Okay, it's me, Corinne. The first person in the second row is June Weintraub, Ralph's wife. The year is 1962--but I guess you all knew that. Bob, I love it how into Chic-a-lac trivia and memories you are--now I know I'm not the only one. Your blog is a lot of fun.

I just remembered Freddie's last name--it was Marcus.

This is amazing! You guys are terrific. Thanks for creating this for us. The girl on the right in the top row is Pamela Ann Mason. (It fascinated me that her initials spelled out her name: P.A.M.) Her younger brother was Vaughan. They were both very sweet. Pam was my bunkmate in Chicksville. She lived in Yonkers. Her dad was a physician and collected special cars. I would love to contact her if anyone knows where she is.

This is fabulous! Thanks.

Neil Leibowitz said...

I dunno Marcy. The girl on the right doesn't look like Pam Mason to me. When I get home, I'll give Richie Gold a call. Maybe he'll remember for sure who was standing next to him when he sees the photo.

Re: Pam Mason. I do remember her parents coming up to visit driving a red Mercedes 300 SL sports car. One hell of a car.

Bob Eber said...

Her father was trackside physician at Bridgehamton Race Track.....

Bob Eber said...

Yeh, Neil, but I bet you don't remember the color of my Rambler...

Neil Leibowitz said...

Bob, Mercedes 300 SLs from 1962 I remember. Andi Kaufman arriving at camp in a huge Jaguar I remember. I barely remember there was such a car as a Rambler. But if I had to take a WAG at it.....green?

Bob Eber said...

Damn, you're good

Neil Leibowitz said...

Sometimes the irrelevant stuff I remember scares even me! But I really don't think that's Pam Mason in the photo.

Corinne said...

I looked at a camp list that Carol gave me and another person it could be is Ellen Forst. I don't think it's Pam Mason.

Neil Leibowitz said...

Ellen Forst. Now there's a name I haven't thought of in a long time. Now that you mention it, that's who I think it is. Good get, Corinne!

I'm off to Florida this afternoon. Be in touch with all of you from down south! Be back soon, and regularly, so I hope to catch many of you at future dinners!

Bob Eber said...

Pam Mason's father was trackside physician at the old Bridgehampton (LI) Race Track....

The raw photos from dinner on Saturday night are on the photo web site. I will run them through software and brighten them up tomorrow.

Bob mentioned earlier that the word "blog" conjured up the image of the Chic-a-lac waterfront on a rainy day. I responded with this, which he asked me to post to the blog...

Neil L said...

The waterfront on a rainy day..... That brings back some memories.

I took my final senior life saving water safety test on the grayest, coldest day we ever had at camp. It was in August, it must have been 55 degrees, and the girls were walking around in what seemed like winter coats. And, there was some stupid fish (probably a pike) nibbling at our toes, while we were treading water. That day, the lake water seemed colder than normal.....and normal was pretty damn cold!

Some nights, it got so cold at camp....especially in Cherokee, up on the hill and half in the woods. We'd wake up in the middle of the night, shivering. so we'd close all the windows. When revellie blew at 7 AM, the cold would be trapped inside the bunk due to the closed windows. Remember that the bunk had no insulation, and we were sleeping under our blankets and "jelly rolls". So we'd all bundle up and go to the flagpole, where it would be way too warm for our dress. Richie Gold devised the idea of sending out a scout, who would test the weather outside our frigid bunk, and report back to us as to how we should dress. This person offically was known as the "Scout".

In the dining room, we had 9 waiters, and the tables only held 8. The waiters ate their meals in the children's dining room, prior to the camp's meals. We had a waiters waiter, who waited on us....usually a senior camper.....Ira Korman comes to mind. So if you were the last waiter to show up to set up, you sat at a table by yourself. This person was officially known as "The Outcast". You didn't want to be "The Outcast", because no one would speak to you.

We had a lot of funny names for people and things. Its only starting to come back to me.

Does anyone else remember stuff like this?

Marcy Silverberg Pulewitz said...

OK, I still think it's Pam Mason. (Truth is, I want it to be P.A.M.) Need to see an actual picture of Ellen Forst for comparison. And is Richie G. a reliable witness? Come to think of it, is there really a Richie G? Not sure I would trust his opinion if one were offered........... Seems to me he may be a figment of our collective imagination. Would really like to be proven wrong (on Richie as a figment - holding out for Pam...)

On another note: Thx for the pictures from NHP restaurant and this "patio" to get together on. You guys are good!

Y'all never cease to amaze me with your camp recollections!! Uncle Carl must be doing flips in his grave and enjoying every minute of this as after all he ever heard were complaints about Camp... food.. lake... Director!...etc
So I guess that gets us off the hook after all these years!! I feel honored to have been a part of all of your lives! ROY

Bob Eber said...

Roy - and we are all glad that you were - and now are - part of our lives. Amazing, isn't it, after 40+ years.
And now that you know how to leave a "comment", don't be a stranger. Soon, if you're a good boy, you'll be eligible to become a true "member", so you can leave original posts, as well as being able to leaving comments on other peoples posts.

Bob Eber said...

And Roy, just what's this thing with Mort and the goatees?

Bob Eber said...

What was Anna's (top row at far left) last name, and does anybody have specific recollections about her? I assume she couldn't be found for the reunion

Neil L said...

Anna was Anna Gordon....Peter Gordon's older sister. Corinne will know why she wasn't there....I don't think she's local. But Peter was at the dinner on Saturday (and at the reunion).

Corinne said...

Anna Gordon lives in San Francisco. Peter said she doesn't like NY--she's very happy in California.

Neil L said...

Now here's an idea. For our next get together, a group of 30 of us fly to San Francisco, and surprise the hell out of Anna. Won't she be excited to see us???

Bob Eber said...

Your plane seats 30?

hi
y'all!
Don't know how to post. hope this works. The girl on the right is Dale Trager, Carol's sister. Trust me on this.
We tried to find the Masons. No luck. Any clues?
this is incredibel. I may never get off the computer

After 40 years Bob asks about the beards???It was just another gimmick to give the kids something to talk about but Boob/Bob..40 years later you ask?? What's with the grey hair??!!!!!!!

Bob Eber said...

40 years ago I didn't notice - I just thought all old men had beards....

Corinne said...

I really like Neil's idea about visiting Anna! We could get a group together and fly all around the USA and surprise people who couldn't come to the reunion. Then we could write a book about it. Can anyone think of a catchy title?

Anonymous said...

Hey AAC of every year... Title for your book "Nostalgia erases all the bad memories"!!! OR "Who are all these OLD people?"

Corinne said...

Hey, anonymous--is that you, Sznitken?

Neil L said...

What's AAC stand for?

Bob Eber said...

Judging from the fact it looks like it was directed to (at?) Corinne, my guess would be that it stands for All Around Camper ..

Neil L said...

Duh. Pretty logical. Didn't make the connection with AAC.
